BlindColor
BlindColor is an app for those who cannot easily identify colors. It will convert the colors seen with the device's camera centrally into audible color names.
What devices does it work on?
It only works on Apple iPhones and iPads with back cameras.
Who can use it?
It was designed for visually impaired people who might benefit from having another aid to determine colors.
How to use it?
- It will only work on Apple devices (iPhones, iPads) with back cameras.
- You can start it using Siri (eg "Hey Siri. Open BlindColor").
- It will read the color name of the pixel at the centre of your device.
- It can use VoiceOver to navigate its controls and switches.
- It uses Siri to read out color names continuously.
- Use VoiceOver to read out the help instructions.
- Point the center of your phone's screen at the place you want to evaluate.
- It gets very annoying quickly, so please use it for short periods only.
- Please use the Contact Us page to send constructive comments.
Tips to use it
- Keep the camera steady, so the center color does not change.
- You can scan for color borders (eg of a car) but the speaker waits just over 1 second before reading the next color. Faster reading rates were found to be confusing as they cut off prior color names.
- If you use arcs of 5-10° and hold for there for 1-2 seconds, you can build up an idea of where the color's borders end (eg finding your blue car!).
Limitations
- It only works on iOS devices, not Android ones (sorry)!
- It only works where there is sufficient light (or else every color will be dark).
Work in progress!
