BlindWords
BlindWords is an app for those who cannot easily read text. It will convert the text seen with the device's camera into spoken words. It is definitely not perfect, but can help read signs out in the street, as well as text in magazines, newspapers and books. It is particularly useful for people with low vision who can line up a page in the camera view. It will keep reading a block of text until finished, or a double tap is detected.
What devices does it work on?
It only works on Apple iPhones and iPads with back cameras.
Who can use it?
It was designed for visually impaired people who might benefit from having another aid to read text.
How to use it?
- It will only work on Apple devices (iPhones, iPads) with back cameras.
- You can start it using Siri (eg "Hey Siri. Open BlindWords").
- Hold it towards the text you want to read (this might be in the street where you are trying to find a particular sign - keep double tapping to refresh the reading).
- It can use VoiceOver to navigate its controls and switches.
- It uses Siri to read out text found in the frame continuously.
- Use VoiceOver to read out the help instructions.
- Point the center of your phone's screen at the place you want to evaluate.
- It gets very annoying quickly, so please use it for short periods only.

Tips to use it
- Keep the camera steady, so the picture frame is clear.
- Double tap the screen to refresh it when it seems to be reading nonsense.
- Beware of scanning more than 1 column in the same frame, since it will read left to right across the columns and be hard to interpret.
Limitations
- It only works on iOS devices, not Android ones (sorry)!
- It only works where there is sufficient light (to differentiate text blocks).
